This past weekend, my husband and I decided to head out and explore some new mountain biking trails near our new home. We found this beautiful, foresty spot nearby—thick with trees and perfect for a little adventure.
We loved the first loop so much that we decided to push through for a second round. But that’s when things got... interesting. Despite having maps at every turn and clear pointers on the trees, we managed to get completely lost. To be honest? We were reading the maps backward!
As I was navigating a narrow, steep downhill, I realized we were off-track. I tried to slow down too quickly, pushed my feet down to stabilize, and felt that sharp, unmistakable strain in my back. Just like that, the ride was over. I had to walk my bike all the way back.
But while I was walking slowly, I saw things I would have completely missed if I had been speeding by on two wheels. I found a tiny turtle snacking on a mushroom. I saw wild blackberries and even stumbled upon a bear cave hidden in the brush. The air literally smelled like honey from the honeysuckle in bloom. It was "woods magic" I never would have noticed if I hadn't been forced to slow down and look at the path differently.
I learned a big lesson that day: if you’re reading the map the wrong way, you’re just going to end up lost and exhausted, no matter how hard you’re pedaling.
In my coaching, I see so many brilliant, high-achieving women doing the exact same thing with their money. You’re working 10-hour days, crushing your career, and pushing hard—but because you’re reading your financial map "backwards," you feel stuck, strained, and perpetually lost.
I went deep into how to flip that map and find your "margin magic" in today’s brand-new podcast episode:
The 5-Question Audit: Stop the Financial Strain
If you feel like you’re "pedaling harder" but not getting anywhere, it’s time to stop and check the map. Before you say "yes" to another payment, another upgrade, or another "manageable" bill, run it through this tactical framework.
With the help of a 2-Line Budget, we first establish your "Must-Pays" (your absolute necessities) and get clarity on your "Daily Expenses." We find the "ghost" expenses stealing your peace and clear them out to make room for what actually makes your life beautiful.
Before signing for new debt, ask yourself these 5 questions:
-
Can I still save? Does this purchase support my wealth-building, or does it steal from my future self?
-
Can I still enjoy life? Will this payment force me to cut out the "life-giving" extras (like that weekend bike trip)?
-
Can I still handle emergencies? If "life happens" (like a back strain or a car repair), do I still have my breathing room?
-
Would I buy this if my income dropped 10%? If the bonus goes away, or a contract ends, does this become a "noose"?
-
Does this move me toward my goals or away from them? Does this purchase fund my purpose or just add to my "mental load"?
